The Works

Typographic needs vary. Much of the time, an off-the-shelf typeface will do just what you need. But when specialized applications are called for, customizing an existing typeface or creating an a new one can actually simplify and speed-up the production process.

Situations that call for a customized or new type design:

  • When an existing font does not suit your application
For example: The typeface works well in smaller point sizes but produces dissatisfactory results when used for headlines.
  • When your font needs an alphabetic extension
For example: Your Latin-only font lacks the required Greek or Cyrillic character sets or you have an incomplete design which you need to extend or turn into a working OpenType font.
  • Need for exclusive corporate type
For example: You need a custom typeface design because the license fees for a currently used corporate typeface eat up too many funds.
  • Adding functionality to an OpenType font
For example: you have an idea for a feature-rich OpenType font but need a skilled programmer for your feature definitions.
  • Integrating a logo into a font
For example: you would like to ensure proper application and distribution of your logo over a variety of platforms and programs.
  • Integrating graphics into a font
For example: For an orientation system you need an extensive set of graphical elements (arrows, boxes, illustrations, numbered bullet points, various types of lines,…) to allow more intelligent applications as well as replacing the cumbersome (an easily error-ridden) process of selecting illustrations and icons manually.
